A legacy built for the future.
The Beginning of an Idea
Before there was a firm, there was a conversation.
In 1974, two first-year law students at UBC, Rick Lindsay and Frank Potts, sat down to talk about their futures. Both knew one thing: they did not want to work for someone else. The idea was simple, yet bold: they would build a law firm of their own.
Over the next few years, their vision took shape. They gathered like-minded classmates, shared research, and held countless meetings about every detail; where to open, how to structure compensation, and how to build a practice rooted in excellence and collaboration.
By the end of articles, the plan was set. On February 1, 1980, Lindsay Kenney LLP opened its doors in downtown Vancouver with five lawyers and three support staff.
A Bold Vision + Opening The Doors
From day one, the founders aimed high. Their goal was not only to start a law firm, but to grow one that would rival Vancouver’s largest. It was ambitious, and this ambition laid the foundation for what LK Law stands for today: vision, growth, and determination.
That vision took shape on February 1, 1980, when Julian Kenney, Rick Lindsay, Frank Potts, and Linda Hogg opened the doors to Lindsay Kenney LLP at 475 Howe Street in downtown Vancouver. Shortly after, Kirk Poje joined as a partner, bringing the firm to five lawyers and three support staff.
As the firm’s reputation and client base grew, so did its leadership. Two years later, Terry Dunn joined from another partnership, adding further depth, experience, and momentum to the growing team.
Building The Team
When the doors opened and the first clients walked in, the foundation for something lasting had begun. From that moment, Lindsay Kenney was more than a partnership, it was a team.
Behind every milestone in LK Law’s history is a team of people who made it possible. From the earliest days, the firm attracted individuals who believed in doing great work together. People who cared about their clients, their colleagues, and their craft.
Many have been part of LK Law for decades, growing alongside the firm and helping shape its culture. Others began here as assistants or articling students before becoming lawyers, partners, or even judges. Some moved on to build their own practices or take on leadership roles across the province, carrying a piece of LK Law with them wherever they went.
There is no question that without the help and contributions of all these people, LK Law would not be the firm it is today.
The Legacy
Over four decades later, the same entrepreneurial spirit that sparked LK Law runs through every office, every client relationship, and every case we take on. We are proud of our roots, but even more proud of the people who have carried that vision forward, generation after generation.
LK Law’s legacy is not only about longevity. It is about the lasting impact made through leadership, mentorship, and community. It is about creating a place where people can build meaningful careers, serve with integrity, and shape the future of law in our province.
